Home Sitemap. Drawing and painting does not require and collaboration or negotiation. Artists explore the special qualities like simplicity and emotions that are most often associated with drawing. A refuge in drawing can help us get away from the rigueur of conceptualism, post-structuralism, and critical theory. Hence there has been an explosion of emotion, experience and feeling. Drawing made the perfect arena for artists to express hitherto repressed notion of authenticity and expression, narrative, the unruly and the irrational.
To draw is to be human because it is primal, simple and pure. In this chapter I have taken a broader outlook as far as drawing and lines is concerned. Lines are all pervasive cultural artifact.
Drawing which is made of lines and which makes the base of all forms of visual art, is a type of language. Some influential philosophical and scientific theories bear testimonial to this ponderous claim. The come back of drawings and painting in contemporary art world indicates a broader concern with authenticity, emotion and feeling. So far now I have considered writings and view points of different artists, philosophers, theorists and anthropologists. From this point I will concentrate on writing of John Berger, more specifically on a recently published book Berger on Drawing.
I have chosen this book because the dominant themes that run through different text compiled in this book relates very closely to those disparate ideas that I have tried to summarize in the this section. Ideas by Berger [Drawing as a language with its temporality and function; Drawing transcend speech and words; Drawing is primal and primitive] closely resembles the view points from Ingold, Rawson, Chomsky et al. And also reading this book over and over again had an enormous impact on my art practice. My point of concentration has shifted and my works has been directed towards drawing.

It is not possible to write, we can only recognize. These two drawings are also resonant with expressive qualities. This expressive quality is an illusive term about which it is hard to write, writing which is supposedly related to reason, but in the last few decades the ideas and conception of emotion and language has changes massively thanks to neuroscience and science of cognition.
Even faculties like thinking , reasoning and languages are related to emotion or affect. Language capacity was thought be the function of our left brain and emotional affectivity is the function of our right brain. But the modern view of brain science gives a different perspective.
Brain functions as a system of intricate net-work. Even when we draw some part of our language centre in brain are active. Ramachandran 16 A study using position emission tomography PET indicates that even simple drawing involves complex interactions between many parts of the brain.
